London-based Directa Plus is collaborating with US luxury furniture maker Plotrona Frau to develop and produce a new high-end, high-tech leather enhanced with graphene.
Poltrona Frau owns several high-end furniture brands, including Cassina, Cappellini, and Luxury Living. It also provides leather for use in first- and business-class airline cabins, and is the chief supplier of leather to Ferrari.
The new leather will be enhanced using Directa Plus’ proprietary G+, which will give it added health and comfort features, including better antiviral and antimicrobial properties, improved temperature regulation, abrasion resistance, and ability to withstand ultraviolet light.
“High-quality leather has been a material of choice for designers and manufacturers for centuries due to its aesthetic and mechanical properties. By working together, Directa Plus and Poltrona Frau can combine knowledge and experience to bring new qualities to leather and enhance existing ones,” Giulio Cesareo, Directa Plus CEO said in a statement.
The companies have signed a two-year letter of intent to work together on the effort, including development and commercial production. The plan is to incorporate Poltrona Frau’s G+ enhanced leather across multiple sectors the company already works with, which could mean a future where graphene-enhanced seats in a Ferrari or first class cabin become the norm.
