Chinese electronics giant Xiaomi is turning to the crowd to raise funding for its new graphene-based smart heating mattress. The mattress generates heat with help from an embedded graphene layer, which the company says will allow it heat to spread uniformly around its surface without creating hot spots or cool spots, a common issue with traditional heated mattresses.
The company is offering early backers of its crowdfunding campaign two different options; a single mattress at around $43 USD, or a double mattress at around $73 USD. So far the campaign has drawn over 3,500 backers, raising a total of 1.5 million yuan (~$225,000 USD).
It isn’t Xiaomi’s first foray into the world of graphene. The company has touted its rechargeable lithium graphene battery, and has incorporated the material into some models of smartphones it produces. It also produces earphones enhanced with graphene.
One purported benefit of the graphene mattress cover is that it allows users to dial in the temperature on either side of the mattress in the double version, allowing for more custom comfort for a couple sharing a bed.
